How’d Your Corps Experience Shape What You’re Doing Now: I am still in my placement school and still devoted to the community in which I initially served. When I finished my two-year commitment, I realized that I was not at a good stopping place; there was so much work left unfinished and I felt uncomfortable removing myself from relationships I had worked tirelessly to build. My Corps experience gave me the support I needed to envision a life ingrained in this community for longer than was required. Additionally, my Corps experience has pushed me to consider a role in school leadership, and possibly principalship, in the near future.
Favorite Thing About Teaching: My favorite thing about teaching is when students identify me or my classroom as a space that is safe. They might not always say it explicitly, but you can tell when a child feels like they are not likely to be harmed or feel lost under your care. It is the most rewarding feeling, knowing that you can shelter or guard students from things they would otherwise be unnecessarily exposed to or hurt by, both physically and emotionally.
Favorite Thing About the Louisiana Delta: The food (which is definitely an indicator of history, culture, and good people)
